New Delhi: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi shone on his first face-off with Jasprit Bumrah in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 on Tuesday, April 07. The much-anticipated
duel dominated headlines ahead of the clash between the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati, with many dubbing it a major test for the 15-year-old.
However, the RR teenage sensation showed no signs of nerves while facing one of the best fast bowlers in the world and left him stunned with his fearless approach. Bumrah’s reputation had little effect on Sooryavanshi, who plundered him for two sixes in an over to prove his mettle. The left-hander smashed a blistering 14-ball 39, helping RR beat the Mumbai Indians by 27 runs in the rain-curtailed game.
How Vaibhav Sooryavanshi fared against Jasprit Bumrah?
15-year-old Sooryavasnhi passed the Bumrah test with flying colours against the Mumbai Indians. Up against one of the world’s best for the first time in his IPL career, the RR sensation started with a six off the very first ball he faced from Bumrah in the game. The swashbuckling left-hander, who is known for his fearless striking, flicked the MI pacer for a six over long-on on the first ball of his first over in the game.
The ball from Bumrah was in the slot, and Sooryavanshi gave it the treatment it deserved by sending it into the stands, leaving the crowd and the MI pacer stunned. Bumrah had a smile on his face as there was little he could do about the 15-year-old, who has taken the IPL by storm with his sensational hitting prowess at such a young age.
Sooryavanshi didn’t stop there as he launched Bumrah for another six on the fourth delivery of the same over. He got hold of a shortish delivery from the pacer and pulled it into the stands for a maximum, making it two sixes against the Mumbai Indians pacer in just three balls in the over. Sooryavanshi’s aggressive onslaught took Bumrah by surprise and left the fans in awe.

Sooryavanshi proved he is a special talent with his onslaught against Bumrah, who is one of the most difficult bowlers to hit for the best of batters across the globe in T20s. Rarely has Bumrah been hit for two sixes in the same over by a batter in the IPL, but Sooryavanshi showcased that reputation and name don’t matter on the big stage.
The 15-year-old didn’t get a chance to face Bumrah again in the game as he was dismissed by Shardul Thakur in the 5th over of his side’s innings after smashing a quickfire 39. His 14-ball 39 was laced with five sixes and a four as the left-hander took the MI bowlers to the cleaners, providing his side with an explosive start in the 11-overs-a-side contest.
Sooryavanshi shared an 80-run stand with his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal, who hammered an unbeaten 77 off 32 balls to power RR to 150/3 in 11 overs. RR bowlers produced an impressive combined effort to restrict Mumbai Indians to 123/9 in 11 overs to secure a thumping victory for the hosts at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati.
