New Delhi: Tesla has officially stopped the production of the Model S saloon and Model X SUV, two of their longest-running electric vehicles. Elon Musk
announced the end of the two cars, tweeting, “Custom orders of the Tesla Model S & X have come to an end. All that’s left are some in inventory.”
This comes after Musk, during January earnings calls, had said that the production of these EVs would stop at the brand’s Fremont plant in California in order to make way for large-scale manufacturing of Optimus humanoid robots, with an annual target of one million units.

Last month, Tesla had been reported of sending email to existing owners where they stated “Model S and Model X marked the beginning of the world’s transition to electric transportation. They also made it possible for Tesla to develop the technology that would move our world toward autonomy. As we make way for this autonomous future, their production will end. If you’d like to bring home a new Model S or Model X, order yours soon from our limited inventory.”
Tesla Model S and Model X have seen dwindling sales lately
The Model S had hit the USA market back in 2012 as Tesla’s second model after the Roadster. The Model S also gets a Plaid iteration with 1,020hp. The Model X came in 2015, becoming Tesla’s first all-electric seven-seater SUV. It is defined by its double-hinge ‘falcon wing’ rear doors, coming with ultrasonic sensors, as well as a large panoramic sunroof.
Tesla Model-Y is the sole model sold by the brand in India
In 2025, Tesla rolled out updates for the two cars, including range enhancements, slight design tweaks, better ride comfort and more features. However, sales have been falling for both Model S and Model X in recent times. The onus of the sales has been on the Model 3 saloon and Model Y SUV; in the first quarter, the two cars made up 95 per cent of the sales for the brand.
Tesla has two major debuts to do, namely the two-seat Cybercab and second-gen of the Roadster, although the timeline isn’t known for now. In India, last year, Tesla debuted the Model Y, and it is the only car at present in the country. Price of the Model Y is at Rs 58.89 lakh, ex-showroom, in the standard RWD trim and R 67.89 lakh in the long-range model.
