Lanning scores 54 vs DC, hits twin WPL milestones

• Lanning's 54, 85-run stand with Deol propelled UP Warriorz but team made only 154/8.

New Delhi: UP Warriorz captain Meg Lanning slammed a fine half-century in her side’s clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi

Mumbai in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 on Wednesday. The Australian legend scored 54 off 38 balls to set up the stage for a strong total for her side after they were asked to bat first in the game.

Lanning opened the batting for the Warriorz with Kiran Navgire, who was dismissed cheaply on a duck in the very first over. The Warriors skipper then combined with Phoebe Litchfield (27) to get her side’s innings back on track with a 47-run stand for the second wicket

Lanning continued to hold one end strongly after Litchefield’s dismissal in the 7th over and went on to notch up her 10th WPL half-century off 32 balls with a boundary against DC pacer Nandini Sharma in the 12th over of her side’s innings. Lanning added a crucial 85-run stand for the third wicket with Harleen Deol, who played perfect support with her 47 off 36 deliveries.

With her 54-run knock against Delhi Capitals, Lanning achieved twin milestones as she became only the third batter to complete 1,000 runs in the WPL and second to complete 10 half-centuries in the tournament. She joined Mumbai Indians skipper Harmanpreet Kaur on top of the elite list of batters with the most fifties in the WPL.

Both Lanning and Harmanpreet have ten centuries each in the tournament. Lanning is the third batter after the Mumbai Indians duo of Nat Sciver-Brunt and Harmanpreet to complete 1,000 runs in the WPL. The UP Warriorz skipper is currently the second-highest run-getter in WPL with 1049 runs in 30 matches at an average of over 40 and a strike rate of 126.08, including 10 fifties.

UP Warriorz fail to capitalise after Lanning-Harleen’s stand

UP Warriorz were cruising at one stage in the game when Harleen and Lanning were going strong in the middle. Despite the duo’s brilliant 85-run stand for the third wicket, UP Warriorz failed to capitalise and threw away the opportunity to post a big total on the board.

In a decision which raised eyebrows and severely hurt UP Warriorz, the team management decided to retire out a set Harleen after the departure of Lanning. The move cost the team dearly as they suffered a mini batting collapse to get restricted to a 154/8 in just 20 overs.

UP Warriorz were in a strong position at 132/3 in the 16th over when Lanning departed. They had a chance to capitalise the death overs, however, the likes of Shweta Sehrawat (11 off 12) and Chloe Tyron (1 off 3) failed to make an impact. Deepti Sharma came out to bat at no.9 and could do little as she played only two ball, scoring two runs off them.
