New Delhi: An international team of researchers has developed a novel method to estimate the masses of newborn planets by analysing the characteristics
of dust disks surrounding young stars. The research provides astronomers with a fresh technique to identify and characterise planets that remain obscured within the environments they are forming. The ring-shaped structures found in protoplanetary disks act as fingerprints of planets. The scientists used detailed computer simulations, and established how planets of varying masses dynamically shape these surrounding dust structures. They discovered that a ring’s width, its total dust content and the precise location of its brightest point all correspond to the mass of the primordial planet.
The researchers identified a consistent mathematical relationship between the location of the brightest point in the disk, and the mass of the host planet, a relationship that remains constant regardless of the imaging wavelength or the size of the dust grains in the system, allowing astronomers to apply the method to existing observational data without requiring comprehensive knowledge of the localised disk conditions. The method was validated using PDS 70, a rare system where planets have been directly imaged within their disk,. The technique yielded a mass estimate for the exoplanet PDS 70c, that aligns strongly with independent measurements.
New method will enhance future telescope data
The technique was also applied to five circumstellar disks from the recent exoALMA survey, generating new mass predictions for suspected planets that have yet to be confirmed. The simulations further revealed that more massive embryonic planets can trap the dust equivalent of up to 20 times the mass of the Earth within these rings. The abundance of highly concentrated dust and pebbles could potentially trigger subsequent rounds of planet formation. Combining these dust-based diagnostics with gas pressure observations will enhance future telescope data, potentially shedding light on the processes at work in the infancy of our own Solar System. A paper describing the research has been published in The Astrophysical Journal.
