New Delhi: The bustling tech hub of Bengaluru got a major new resident today. US based artificial intelligence company Anthropic officially opened its
first office in India on Monday. This move marks a significant expansion for the company in the country which has quickly become its second largest market for its AI assistant named Claude. The company revealed that India drives nearly half of Claude’s usage for computer and mathematical tasks like building applications and modernising systems.
It seems the appetite for AI in India is growing fast. Anthropic mentioned that its run rate revenue in India has doubled since it announced its expansion plans in October last year. The new Bengaluru office will be the company’s second in Asia after Tokyo. It will serve as a hub for hiring and customer support and will be led by tech veteran managing director Irina Ghose.
Big partnerships with Indian companies
To solidify its presence the AI firm announced several key partnerships across different sectors. The company stated that major Indian enterprises are already using their technology to speed up work.
- Air India is deploying Claude to help developers build custom software faster.
- Fintech firm CRED said it achieved quicker feature delivery and improved testing coverage using Anthropic’s tools.
- IT services giant Cognizant is rolling out Claude to about 350,000 employees globally to modernise legacy systems.
- Swiggy is using the technology to enable grocery ordering and dining reservations directly through the AI assistant.
Startups are also jumping on the bandwagon. Indian startups including Razorpay are integrating Claude into risk and operations systems.
Why India matters to Anthropic
The company sees huge potential in the local talent pool. Irina Ghose highlighted the unique position of the country in the global AI landscape. “India represents one of the world’s most promising opportunities to bring the benefits of responsible AI to vastly more people and enterprises,” Ghose said in a statement.
She further added that “Already, it’s home to extraordinary technical talent, digital infrastructure at scale, and a proven track record of using technology to improve people’s lives. That’s exactly the foundation you need to make sure this technology reaches the people who can benefit from it most.”
Focus on social impact and government
Beyond big business the company is looking at social sectors too. They are working with nonprofits to build public evaluation tools for AI performance in areas such as agriculture and law. In the legal sector it is backing a WhatsApp based service that provides case updates and translations in local languages.
The government is also getting involved. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has launched its first official government server using the standard to make national data more accessible to AI systems. Anthropic also mentioned that its Model Context Protocol has been donated to the Linux Foundation.
