New Delhi: Amid rising temperatures, authorities in Delhi have issued detailed guidelines for schools to safeguard students from the ongoing heatwave.
The India Meteorological Department has placed thenational capital under a yellow alert, warning of possible heatwave conditions.
Restrictions on outdoor activities
Schools have been directed to limit or suspend outdoor assemblies. Any assembly must take place in shaded or indoor spaces and should be brief.Authorities have also barred classes in open areas. Outdoor sports and similar activities will remain suspended until conditions improve.
Focus on hydration and safety
An important measure is the introduction of a “water bell” system. This will remind students to drink water every 45 to 60 minutes. Schools must ensure the availability of safe and cool drinking water at multiple points on campus. Students have also been advised to carry sufficient water from home.
Awareness and monitoring measures
Schools will display IEC material related to heatwave safety at prominent locations. Awareness sessions will educate students about symptoms, prevention, and the importance of hydration. A “buddy system” will also be implemented so that students can keep a check on each other’s health during school hours.
Communication with parents
Schools will share regular weather updates and advisories with parents through WhatsApp groups. Parents have been advised to send children in light cotton clothing and maintain hygiene.
Each school will appoint a nodal teacher to oversee the implementation of these measures and ensure compliance.
Authorities have made it mandatory for all schools to submit an Action Taken Report by May 2, 2026, confirming that the guidelines have been followed.
