New Delhi: Now, usually if you type a word on Google, the usual thing you see is the definition of the word, which is followed by the usual ten links.
This, though, wasn’t what happened when people tried to search the word ‘disregard’ using the browser on May 22nd.
Instead of the usual response, the browser responded like an AI chatbot, ready to start or end a user’s command.
Of course, this meant the internet was abuzz, with many immediately going over to look at the results. This happened amid Google’s rollout of an absolutely new Search experience, putting AI summaries at the forefront and pushing the traditional links format down the page.
What did Google actually show during different searches?
When people tried to search the word ‘disregard’, the browser came up with a reply that read as “Understood. Let me know whenever you have a new prompt or question.” The glitch led to Google having some backlash on social media. In fact, Merriam-Webster, which is America’s leading provider of giving information on language, even took a dig by posting a screenshot of the search and giving the actual meaning of the word ‘disregard’.

Google didn’t give any public explanation or anything for this, and in fact, if the word is searched now, the results are back to showing the meaning of the word, at the time of writing this article.
Users noted that this wasn’t just limited to the word disregard and in fact someone even shared screenshots of the result shown by Google AI overview for the “forget”, where the response was something like asking with “I’m all ears! Did you want me to wipe the slate clean, or is there a specific topic you’d like me to start fresh with? Let me know what you’d like to do-whether you need a new search, a creative idea, or a problem solved-and we’ll take it from there!”

Even for the word “shut” the response was something on the lines of “Got it! Let me know what you’d like to do-whether you need a new search, a creative idea, or a problem solved-and we’ll take it from there!”
