New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held a closed-door meeting with National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders and spoke about the newly
announced India-US trade deal and how it will benefit New Delhi, sources said. The Prime Minister said that the agreement has created a positive atmosphere. “People were criticising, but we remained patient, and it yielded results,” he told the MPs at the meeting.
The NDA parliamentary party was held a day after India and the US announced the much-anticipated trade deal that also saw Washington slashing the reciprocal tariff on New Delhi to 18 per cent from 25 per cent.
PM Modi urges MPs to participate in debates
PM Modi urged all NDA MPs to be present in the House and ensure full attendance as he emphasised the importance of parliamentary participation. He also instructed them to actively participate in legislative discussions on key issues and highlight government achievements directly to the public.
“All MPs should be present in the House, take part in the discussion,” he said, according to sources familiar with the meeting. The Prime Minister further requested the MPs to visit their constituents and communicate the key achievements of the recently presented 2026 Union Budget.
What PM Modi said on India-US trade deal
On India-US trade deal, PM Modi said the agreement is a significant milestone and had created a “better environment” for bilateral relations. Acknowledging the challenges the government faced during negotiations, PM Modi said critics had raised doubts but they remained patient.
“People were criticising but we kept courage. I had said that the world order is changing after Covid, that is visible, and today the world order is twisting in India’s favour,” he said.
Describing the trade deal with the US “a big achievement”, PM Modi said the government’s patience has paid off. “A big trade deal has been struck…This is a major victory for our diplomacy, and it shows that patience always pays off,” he added.
US President Donald Trump and PM Modi had earlier held several rounds of negotiations to materialise the trade deal, but the talks hit a roadblock after Trump imposed 50 per cent tariffs on Indian goods, including the 25 per cent punitive tariffs for India’s procurement of Russian crude oil. The additional tariff also turned ties between India and the US sour.
