New Delhi: The Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha is traditionally recited or heard during the evening Puja before women break their fast after moonrise. The most
widely known story is that of Veeravati, a woman whose seven brothers trick her into believing that the Moon has risen before it actually has. Another popular tale tells of Karwa, whose courage and devotion save her husband from danger. As Karwa Chauth 2026 falls on Thursday, October 29, here are the traditional stories associated with the vrat and why they remain an important part of the festival.
Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha: The Story of Veeravati and Her Seven Brothers
According to the popular Karwa Chauth Katha, there once lived a young woman named Veeravati, who was the only sister among seven brothers. She was deeply loved by her family and, after her marriage, returned to her parental home to observe her first Karwa Chauth fast.
Veeravati began the vrat with devotion, abstaining from food and water. But as the day passed, hunger and thirst left her increasingly exhausted. Her seven brothers could not bear to see their beloved sister suffer and began looking for a way to help her.
One of the brothers climbed a tree and placed a light behind a sieve, creating the appearance of the rising Moon. The brothers called Veeravati and told her that the Moon had appeared.
Believing them, Veeravati offered Arghya and prepared to break her fast. In some versions of the story, she notices troubling signs while eating, including finding a hair in her food and sneezing. Before she can finish her meal, news arrives that her husband has died.
Heartbroken, Veeravati rushes towards her husband’s home, overwhelmed by grief. Along the way, she encounters Indrani, the wife of Lord Indra, and seeks to understand why such a tragedy has occurred.
Indrani explains that Veeravati broke her fast before the actual Moonrise. She advises her to observe the Chauth fasts with sincerity and devotion.
Determined to make amends, Veeravati follows the prescribed observance with renewed faith. In the traditional account, her devotion is ultimately rewarded, and her husband is restored to life.
The story is remembered as a reminder of patience, faith and the importance of observing the vrat according to tradition. Its details and ending vary across regional retellings.
Another Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha: The Story of Karwa and the Crocodile
Another popular Karwa Chauth story centres on a devoted woman named Karwa, whose husband encounters a crocodile while bathing in a river.
Seeing her husband in danger, Karwa acts courageously and binds the crocodile with a thread. She then appeals to Yama, the god associated with death, asking him to save her husband and punish the creature responsible.
Impressed by Karwa’s determination and devotion, Yama intervenes, and her husband is saved in the traditional tale.
The story celebrates courage and steadfastness in the face of danger. It also reflects the protective spirit associated with Karwa Chauth, in which prayers and devotion form an important part of the observance.
Why Is Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha Heard During Puja?
The Vrat Katha is an important part of the traditional evening observance. Women gather for Puja, worship the deities according to their family customs and listen to the story before the Moon-sighting ritual.
The Katha connects the day’s fasting with its religious and cultural meaning. The story of Veeravati highlights patience and faith, while the tale of Karwa emphasises courage and devotion.
Different families and regions may follow different versions of the stories. Some also include other traditional narratives during the Puja. Devotees generally follow the Katha customary in their household or community.
When Should Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha Be Recited in 2026?
Karwa Chauth will be observed on Thursday, October 29, 2026. The Vrat Katha is traditionally heard during the evening Puja, before Moonrise and the ritual of offering Arghya to Chandra Dev.
The exact sequence can differ by family and region. Check the local Puja Muhurat to plan the evening rituals.
For many families, the Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha is more than a story passed down through generations. It brings devotion, family traditions and shared memories together, making it one of the most meaningful parts of the festival’s evening Puja.
