New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India on Wednesday rejected circulating reports that it had sold a portion of its gold reserves, clarifying that its physical
stock remains unchanged at 880.52 tonnes.
In an official statement, the central bank described the media claims as incorrect and urged the public to depend on official disclosures for accurate information.
RBI clarifies gold stock details
The central bank said details of its gold holdings are routinely published in its Monthly Bulletin, with the latest edition available on the RBI website. According to that official disclosure, the physical stock of gold stands at 880.52 tonnes as of date and there has been no reduction.

RBI urged citizens and market participants to rely on verified, official communications rather than unconfirmed reports. The statement aimed to address market confusion after a Bloomberg Economics-linked story suggested the RBI might have sold roughly $12 billion worth of gold during a two-week period ending May 22, while increasing purchases of foreign-currency assets.

The Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check unit also labelled the claims as false. Citing RBI data, PIB noted that gold’s share in India’s foreign exchange reserves actually rose from 13.92% at end-September 2025 to 16.70% on March 31, 2026 and further to 16.85% as of May 22, 2026, data inconsistent with a large gold sale.
