Dehradun: A new chapter in India’s urban mobility is about to unfold as the Dehradun–Mussoorie ropeway, scheduled to be opened in September 2026. This
ambitious project will be the country’s longest passenger ropeway, covering a distance of 5.2 kilometres and ascending 1,000 metres.
Currently, the road journey between Dehradun and Mussoorie takes nearly two hours across 33 kilometres of winding hilly terrain. Once operational, the ropeway will reduce this travel time to just 20 minutes, offering tourists and locals a safe, scenic, and eco-friendly alternative.

Tourism boost
Mussoorie, known as the “Queen of Hills,” attracts thousands of visitors every year. The ropeway will not only ease travel but also enhance the tourist experience by offering panoramic aerial views. With reduced travel time, more tourists are expected to visit Mussoorie, boosting local businesses, hotels, and homestays.
Expansion plans
The consortium has also secured the Yamunotri Ropeway Project, spanning 3.8 km between Yamunotri and Kharsali in Uttarakhand. This project will significantly improve access to one of India’s most revered pilgrimage sites, further strengthening Uttarakhand’s tourism infrastructure.
Technology and safety
The ropeway is being developed by Mussoorie Sky Car Private Limited, a consortium of FIL Industries, SRM Engineering LLP, and POMA SAS from France. The gondola system will run entirely on electricity, making it sustainable and environmentally friendly.
Certified under European safety standards (CEN), the ropeway will undergo regular inspections and security checks. Waterproof cabins will ensure year-round operations, allowing tourists to enjoy breathtaking views regardless of the season. Some components will be manufactured in India, boosting domestic industry and creating job opportunities.
