Kuno National Park, Madhya Pradesh: India’s ambitious reintroduction program, Project Cheetah,” reached a historic milestone this Sunday as the total population
of the world’s fastest land animal officially crossed the 50-mark on Indian soil.
The surge comes courtesy of a “high-five” from Namibian cheetah “Jwala”, who gave birth to five healthy cubs in her third successful litter.
A mother’s hat-trick
Jwala, one of the original feline pioneers translocated from Namibia in 2022, has cemented her status as a “super mother” of the program. This latest delivery, which took place on March 9, 2026, marks her third litter in India. With these five new arrivals, the total number of cheetah cubs born in India has risen to 33, spread across ten successful litters since the project’s inception.
Crossing the 50-mark
For the first time since the species was declared extinct in India in 1952, the country is now home to 53 cheetahs. This number includes the surviving adults translocated from South Africa and Namibia, alongside the growing generation of Indian-born cubs.
“This is an encouraging milestone,” a senior forest department official told the media. “The birth of these five cubs and crossing the 50-mark demonstrates that the program is gradually stabilising after the initial hurdles of translocation.”
Thriving in the wild
Wildlife experts are viewing the frequent births as a definitive sign that the cheetahs have successfully adapted to the Kuno landscape. The park’s unique mix of open grasslands and woodland patches, combined with a steady supply of prey like chital (spotted deer) and chinkara, has provided the ideal environment for the African predators to hunt and breed.
Round-the-clock vigilance
While the mood at Kuno is celebratory, the mission remains critical. Veterinary teams, wildlife biologists, and forest guards are maintaining a 24/7 watch over Jwala and her quintuplets. The coming weeks are considered a “danger zone” for cub survival in the wild, given past challenges with cub mortality in the program’s early years.
High-level recognition
The news triggered a wave of positivity across the government. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the development, hailing it as a scientific and symbolic victory for India’s conservation efforts.
“Cheetah Jwala has given birth to 5 cubs, marking another major milestone for Project Cheetah. With this, India’s cheetah population has crossed the half-century mark, reaching 53,” CM Yadav wrote in his X post.

If these five cubs thrive, they will not only bolster the Kuno population but may eventually serve as the foundation for expanding the cheetah’s range to other protected habitats across India.
