New Delhi: US President Donald Trump on Friday signed an executive order lifting the additional 25 per cent tariff imposed on Indian imports over New Delhi’s
purchases of Russian oil, the White House said.
According to the order, the extra duty will be removed for Indian goods entered for consumption from 12.01 am Eastern Time (US) on February 7, 2026.
“India has committed to stop directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil,” the executive order said, adding that New Delhi has also agreed to increase purchases of US energy products and recently committed to a framework to expand defence cooperation with Washington over the next 10 years.
Trade agreement between US-India
The development comes days after Washington and New Delhi finalised a trade agreement after months of tariff tensions. According to the deal, the United States will reduce so-called reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods to 18 per cent from 25 per cent.
The White House said the agreement also includes removal of tariffs on certain aircraft and parts. In a joint statement, the two sides said India intends to purchase $500 billion worth of US energy products, aircraft and parts, precious metals, technology products and coking coal over the next five years.
US imposed penalty tariffs in August last year
The additional 25 per cent levy had been imposed on top of a reciprocal 25 per cent tariff in August last year, over India’s continued imports of Russian crude. Trump had repeatedly criticised India’s oil purchases, saying they indirectly supported Russia’s war machine.
The new order also includes a compliance clause. It authorises the US Commerce Secretary to review India’s oil import behaviour and recommend further action, including reimposition of the 25 per cent additional duty, if India resumes directly or indirectly importing Russian oil.
India has been a major buyer of discounted Russian oil since 2022, helping contain its import bill after Western sanctions on Moscow.
