New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to become the longest-serving democratically elected Prime Minister of India, surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru
on Wednesday. The milestone offers a perfect moment to look back at the country’s vast economic evolution. The contrast between India’s first Prime Minister and its current leader is starkest when viewed through a single, fundamental challenge, such as how the nation feeds its people.
Under Nehru, a young India fought a desperate battle against starvation, whereas under Modi, the nation has achieved agricultural self-reliance at an unprecedented scale.
The problem of food security
In the decades immediately following independence, food insecurity was a constant shadow over India. During the Nehru era, despite considerable nation-building efforts and the creation of major public institutions, India remained heavily dependent on foreign food aid to feed a population of less than 37 crore people. The most painful symbol of this vulnerability was the PL-480 agreement with the United States. Under this deal, India imported massive quantities of wheat and food grains during the 1950s and 1960s to avoid mass starvation.
This era was often described as a ‘ship-to-mouth’ existence. It was a time when the literal arrival of foreign grain shipments at Indian ports determined whether families across the country had food on their plates. Regular droughts, low agricultural productivity, and an almost complete lack of rural infrastructure meant that food scarcity remained a persistent, stressful national concern.
The shift to absolute self-reliance
Today, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India represents a dramatically different story. The days of relying on foreign nations for basic survival are long gone. India is no longer dependent on external food assistance and has firmly established itself among the world’s largest food producers.
This turnaround relies heavily on modernised infrastructure. Record procurement and highly efficient digital distribution systems now support the country’s massive welfare delivery network, ensuring that aid reaches people without leaking through corruption. The most prominent example is the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, which has provided free food grains to nearly 80 crore Indians on an unprecedented scale.
From scarcity to global supplier
The focus has also expanded from just fighting hunger to improving overall health. Through the POSHAN Abhiyaan, nutritious meals and targeted nutrition support are reaching crores of children, pregnant women, and mothers across the country.
The biggest indicator of how far India has come since the PL-480 days is its current global position. India today exports food grains to the rest of the world, even while running one of the largest domestic food security programmes in human history. As PM Modi sets a new record for leadership longevity, the journey from a vulnerable “ship-to-mouth” economy to a self-sufficient agricultural powerhouse remains a defining achievement of modern India.
