New Delhi: The Delhi Police has booked an Assistant Professor of the Jamia Milia Islamia University in the national capital for allegedly assaulting an upper
division clerk (UDC), working in the department of polytechnic. The case has been filed under SC/ST Act, the police said.
What the complainant claims?
The case was booked after an allegation by Ramphool Meena on January 13 that the accused approached his desk, used objectionable language, and also behaved violently. The complainant alleged that he was targeted because of his religion. He also accused several people from the university of calling him ‘Kafir’.
Police deny allegations of religious conversion
“On the complaint of Ramphool Meena, Associate Professor Riyazzudin in the department of Civil engineering, a case has been registered at the Jamia Nagar police station under Section 3(i) (r) SC/ST (PoA) Act and 115(2) BNS,” an official said. The police, however. Denied any link between the incident and allegations of religious conversion.
Issuing a statement, the police said, “Legal proceedings are underway. Statements are being recorded, and evidence is being collected,” and added that the matter remained under investigation. In its statement, the police also rejects reports of religious conversion.
“It is strictly clarified that the complainant has made no allegation regarding any attempt at forceful religious conversion. Such reports are factually incorrect and baseless,” the statement added further. It also urged the public as well as the media not to circulate information that may harm social harmony.
Not received any formal complaint: University
In its statement, the university added, “We have not received any formal complaint in relation to any physical altercation or any caste-based incident from our employee.” It added that the video, believed to be of the assault, is doctored.
