New Delhi: The Maharashtra government on Tuesday signed memorandums of understanding for projects aimed at generating 25,400 MW of nuclear power, involving
an estimated investment of ₹6.5 lakh crore. The agreements were signed with Adani Power, Reliance Industries Limited, NTPC Limited and Lalitpur Power Generation Company Limited, part of the Bajaj Group.
The development comes months after India opened its civil nuclear power sector to private companies through the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Act, passed in December 2025, ending a six-decade state monopoly on nuclear power generation.

Adani Power plans to invest ₹1.5 lakh crore to generate 6,000 MW of energy, creating around 12,000 jobs, with its proposed plant located at Barsu in Ratnagiri district. Reliance Industries has proposed a 7,200 MW nuclear plant at Purnagadh in Ratnagiri, with a planned investment of ₹2 lakh crore and employment for over 100,000 people. NTPC plans to invest ₹1 lakh crore to generate 7,200 MW at Devgad in Sindhudurg district, creating around 5,000 jobs. Lalitpur Power Generation Company has proposed a 5,000 MW project with an investment of ₹2 lakh crore.
Adani’s Barsu site stirs controversy again
Adani Power’s proposed location at Barsu in Ratnagiri is likely to attract attention, as the same coastal village had previously faced massive protests over a proposed oil refinery project. Local residents, environmental activists and political groups had strongly opposed that project over concerns related to land acquisition, environmental degradation and the impact on the ecologically sensitive Konkan region.
Maharashtra to be India’s nuclear energy hub
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed all companies to expedite implementation and begin surveys to determine project locations. Speaking after the MoU signing, Fadnavis said Maharashtra will play a key role in helping India become an “energy-rich nation” through large-scale investments in clean and nuclear energy. Three of the four companies attended the signing ceremony, while Lalitpur Power Generation Company will complete the formalities later as its officials were abroad.
