New Delhi: India’s first ‘Museum of Words’, dedicated to the history and evolution of Indian languages, has been inaugurated at the National Library in Kolkata
by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The museum, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2020, aims to showcase the rich linguistic heritage of the country through interactive exhibits and historical displays.
The museum features nine galleries, with the highlight being the ‘Language Timeline’, which is the largest gallery in the collection. It traces the journey and development of 22 Indian languages, offering visitors an insight into the country’s diverse linguistic traditions.
Amit Shah highlights importance of language
Addressing the gathering at the inauguration, Amit Shah said there is no place for narrow-mindedness in India’s culture and that people should never face obstacles because of their beliefs or ideas. He also noted that schools across the country now sing the complete version of Vande Mataram, calling it a significant achievement.
The Home Minister also recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had granted classical language status to Bengali. He praised Bengal’s contribution to the nation, saying the state has often been ahead of its time in leading the country. Shah also mentioned writing a letter to Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, expressing hope that one of his aspirations would be fulfilled.
Five-point vision for Indian languages
Speaking about the role of language in shaping society, Shah said language does more than help people communicate—it also influences the way people think. He remarked that words form the foundation of language and human thought.
He outlined five key ideas for preserving and promoting Indian languages:
- Every child should begin learning through their mother tongue, as the language spoken at home has the greatest influence.
- Schools and universities should encourage original thinking instead of depending only on translations or copied material.
- All Indian languages should be digitally preserved and made compatible with artificial intelligence to ensure their survival for generations.
- Libraries and museums should actively engage young people instead of remaining limited to physical spaces.
- Every young Indian should learn at least one additional Indian language alongside their mother tongue.
Preserving India’s linguistic heritage
According to Amit Shah, following these five principles can help strengthen and preserve India’s linguistic diversity for the future. The newly inaugurated Museum of Words is expected to become an important centre for learning, research and celebrating the evolution of Indian languages.
