Chennai: The Tamil Nadu’s capital city has witnessed a sharp increase in the prices of tea and coffee as the ongoing shortage of gas cylinders continues
to disrupt daily life across the city. Tea that was previously available for Rs. 12 is now being sold for Rs. 20, while coffee prices have jumped from Rs. 15 to Rs. 25, drawing complaints from the common public who rely on these everyday beverages. The price hike has added to the growing frustration among Chennai residents already grappling with the ripple effects of the fuel supply crisis.
Tea shop owners explain price hikes
When questioned about the sudden increase in beverage prices, tea shop owners in Chennai provided stark explanations for their decisions. The owners reported that gas cylinders have become extremely difficult to obtain through regular channels. They are facing a black market where agencies are selling a single cylinder for amounts ranging from Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 5,000, a massive increase from standard regulated prices. These exorbitant costs have forced shopkeepers to pass on the burden to consumers through increased tea and coffee prices.
Global conflict triggers local disruptions
The difficulties being faced by various countries due to the ongoing war between Iran and Israel have now reached Indian shores with tangible consequences. Iran recently announced its decision to close the Strait of Hormuz, which serves as the main route for global crude oil supply. The Iranian authorities have declared that they will attack any cargo ship attempting to enter the Strait of Hormuz in violation of this closure. This aggressive posture has disrupted not only the supply of crude oil but also the supply of gas, creating a chain reaction that has reached Indian cities including Chennai.
Hotel closures and food service reductions
The gas cylinder shortage has forced widespread closures of hotels in various cities including Chennai and Bengaluru. Even among the establishments that have managed to remain operational, significant reductions in food production have become necessary. Hostels have also been affected, with meal services being cut back substantially. This situation has created particular hardship for the many young professionals working in Chennai who depend on hostels and small eateries for their daily meals.
India’s heavy dependence on gas imports
India’s vulnerability to these global disruptions stems from its significant reliance on imported gas. The country sources approximately 60 percent of its gas requirements from Saudi Arabia, making it particularly susceptible to any disturbances in West Asian supply routes. The current disruption in supply has resulted in a severe shortage of gas cylinders across India, with Chennai being one of the worst-affected cities.
