New Delhi: With less than 48 hours remaining until director H Vinoth’s Jana Nayagan, starring Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, releases worldwide, “Thalapathy”
fever has once again swept across the country, likely for the last time. Jana Nayagan will release in theatres on Thursday, July 23, with early shows starting at 6 am in several states.
Regarding the first day advance ticket sales, the political action movie is earning impressive numbers and has crossed Rs 15 crore for day one in India. By 9 am on Tuesday, July 21, ticket sales for the first day reached Rs 15.09 crore including blocked seats, as reported by box office tracker Sacnilk.
Tamil version leads advance bookings
The Tamil version earned around Rs 10.22 crore after selling 4,17,636 tickets across 5,091 shows, while the Telugu and Hindi versions earned smaller amounts of Rs 12,02,431 and Rs 29,210. Most of the money earned came from Tamil Nadu at Rs 6.74 crore, Karnataka at Rs 4.88 crore, and Kerala at Rs 1.8 crore.

The film has seen strong advance ticket sales since bookings opened on Sunday, July 19, but the trend is slightly different from what box office experts expected. Instead of every show selling out instantly, ticket sales are increasing gradually instead of explosively.
Director Venkat Prabhu’s The Greatest of All Time (2024) made Rs 29.83 crore in advance bookings in India and went on to earn Rs 126.32 crore worldwide on its first day, while Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Leo (2023) saw Rs 46.36 crore in first-day advance bookings without blocked seats and collected Rs 148.5 crore globally on day one. Jana Nayagan is trailing Vijay’s last two films in advance bookings at the moment.
Looking at whether Jana Nayagan can beat Rajinikanth’s Coolie
Tracking site Sacnilk predicts the political action movie will likely open around Rs 50 to 60 crore in India. However, these numbers could still change if there is a big jump in last-minute ticket purchases.
It is still uncertain if Jana Nayagan can beat director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Rajinikanth film Coolie, which made Rs 151 crore, to set the record for the biggest day-one worldwide collection for a Tamil movie.
The film also stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Narain, and Nassar in important roles, with music composed by Anirudh Ravichander.
