Mumbai: The BSE Sensex declined 271.76 points to 82,974.42 on January 20, 2026. The NSE Nifty went down 105.05 points to 25,484.45. The Stock Market benchmark
indices went dropped sue to unabated selling by foreign investors and geopolitical tensions weighed on investors’ sentiment.
Foreign institutional investors infused Rs 3,262.82 crore to buy equities on Monday, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) continued to buy as they pumped in Rs 4,234.30 crore to buy stocks, according to exchange data.
Laggards from the 30-Sensex pack: Asian Paints, InterGlobe Aviation, Trent, Bajaj Finserv, Eternal, and Bajaj Finance. Gainers included, UltraTech Cement, ITC, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and State Bank of India.

“Heightened geopolitical tensions, along with persistent foreign investor selling and continued weakness in the rupee, are weighing on confidence and likely to cap any meaningful upside in domestic equities even during short-term recoveries. Steady buying by domestic institutional investors continues to act as a key stabiliser, absorbing selling pressure and helping prevent deeper drawdowns in the market,” Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, an online trading and wealth tech firm, told PTI.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 index and South Korea’s Kospi index traded in positive zone, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and Shanghai’s SSE Composite index traded lower. The US stock markets settled on Monday for a holiday. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, gained 0.11 per cent to USD 64.01 per barrel.
On January 19, 2026, the BSE barometer dropped 324.17 points to end at 83,246.18. The Nifty went down 108.85 points to 25,585.50.
