New Delhi: Google has hit a large milestone in its quest to achieve smarter and more affordable use of electricity. The firm declared that it has obtained
1 gigawatt (GW) of data centre demand response with long-term contracts with various utility partners in the United States. This will be an effort to make the power systems more flexible and efficient as the electricity demand is ever growing higher.
The milestone underscores the influence of big-tech companies on the transformation of energy consumption. Google is doing this by modifying the manner and timing of the electricity usage by their data centres, thereby assisting the utilities in managing the supply and demand better. It is likely to enhance grid reliability and make providers and consumers cost less.
How demand response works
The demand response system of Google enables it to decrease or divert energy consumption in its data centres during the peak periods. It is achieved by changing some machine learning loads, which can be postponed or rescheduled without compromising the total performance.
Since the previous year, the company has increased its partnerships. It first cooperated with Indiana Michigan Power and the Tennessee Valley Authority. It has now acquired new contracts with Entergy Arkansas, Minnesota Power and DTE Energy. Such collaborations enable new data centres to have a quicker connection to local grids and reduce the short-term stress on electricity systems.
Boosting grid stability and cutting costs
Demand response assists the utilities in managing peak consumption without constructing additional facilities. Through increased efficiency in consuming the available resources, the energy providers will be in a position to save the expensive situations of setting up new power stations and new transmission systems only to be used during the seasons of high demand.
