Kolkata: Mamata Banerjee was seen slapping a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker during a protest march in Kolkata, with the video quickly going viral on social
media.
The march was organised by the ruling Trinamool Congress to protest the alleged rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in Baruipur. The demonstration, however, witnessed repeated confrontations between TMC and BJP supporters.

According to reports, BJP workers attempted to block the procession by forming a human chain and raising slogans, including “chor, chor (thief)”. TMC workers allegedly faced pushing, jostling and eggs being thrown at them as tensions escalated.
Security personnel intervened to control the situation, with police resorting to a baton charge to disperse the clashing groups and restore order.
As the rally approached Mamata Banerjee’s residence, a large crowd gathered outside. While trying to disperse the crowd, the Chief Minister was seen slapping one of her own party workers and pushing others aside.
Mamata blames BJP
Following the incident, Banerjee accused the BJP of orchestrating the violence and criticised the police response.
She said, “We had the court’s permission to conduct this rally. Even then, they assaulted our women. Many of our workers are bleeding badly, and I had to come out of my house to rescue them. They took out a bike rally in the morning near my residence and threatened me. They kept playing DJs all through the rally route and even snatched our hand mics for which we had the court’s leave.”
She further alleged, “Police are acting like BJP cadres; I am sorry to say.”
BJP rejects allegations
The BJP denied the Chief Minister’s accusations. State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said, “Mamata Banerjee is a veteran political worker who loves to walk on the streets. We have not obstructed her from doing that. But the TMC betrayed the trust people put in the party 15 years ago. They did not allow the violent political culture in the state to change.”
The Kolkata Police had initially denied permission for the protest march. However, the Calcutta High Court later allowed the rally after directing that its route be changed to minimise inconvenience to the public.
