New Delhi: The Geminids meteor shower is about to peak and continue providing skywatchers around the globe with one of the most spectacular celestial events
of the year. Due to the bright yellow fireballs and reliability of the event, it is predicted that the event will be able to bring up to 120 meteors per hour during the nights of December 12 and 13. The lack of clouds, the low levels of light pollution, and patience will provide viewers with the most suitable opportunity to see the show.
Each December, the Geminids occur as the earth is passing through a belt of debris, which has been left behind by the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. This is unlike the other meteor showers, which are formed by comets; this is formed by an asteroid and gives its meteors a unique colour and speed. The shower is normally seen at around 9 p.m. and ends past midnight and peaks at about 2 a.m.
What makes the Geminids special
The Geminids are named after the Gemini constellation, the location in the sky where the meteors appear to be coming out. The shower was first identified in the mid-1800s with few meteors an hour, but over time, it has increased dramatically. It has been considered as one of the most reliable and powerful meteor events of the year today.
How to watch the meteor shower
NASA suggests that the shower should be seen in the dark, open space that is distant from the lights in the city. When lying on your back with your feet to the south, you get the greatest amount of sky you can get. Eyes require approximately 30 minutes to properly adjust to the dark, which enhances the chances of observing more meteors. The programme runs until dawn, and to enjoy the best, one has to be patient.
