New Delhi: India has received the fourth squadron of the S-400 Triumf air defence system from Russia, giving a major boost to the country’s long-range
air defence network. The advanced missile defence system, known as the Sudarshan air defence system in Indian service, arrived by sea a few days ago and is expected to be deployed in an operational sector soon, according to ANI citing defence sources.
The latest delivery marks the arrival of the fourth of the five S-400 squadrons ordered by India under a deal signed with Russia in 2018. Three squadrons are already operational and have been deployed in strategically important sectors across the country.
Delivery delayed by war
India signed an agreement with Russia in 2018 for the purchase of five S-400 air defence squadrons. While the first three systems were delivered and inducted into service over the past few years, the delivery schedule for the remaining two squadrons faced delays due to disruptions caused by the Russia-Ukraine war.
Defence officials expect the fifth and final squadron under the contract to arrive in India within the next few months.
More S-400 systems planned
India is also looking to further strengthen its air defence capabilities. The Defence Acquisition Council has already approved the procurement of five additional S-400 squadrons.
At the same time, the country is developing an indigenous long-range air defence system under Project Kusha. The programme aims to build a domestic system capable of engaging aerial threats at ranges comparable to the Russian platform. Defence manufacturer Solar Industries is involved in the project as a development and production partner.
Role during Operation Sindoor
The S-400 system played an important role during Operation Sindoor and was extensively used by the Indian Air Force during the military confrontation with Pakistan between May 7 and May 10.
According to defence sources, the system helped counter Pakistan Air Force operations and was involved in the reported interception of a high-value surveillance aircraft at a distance exceeding 300 km.
The operational performance of the S-400 during the conflict strengthened the case for acquiring additional units.
Russia has already trained Indian personnel to operate the platform. The S-400 Triumf is regarded as one of the world’s most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile defence systems. It can detect, track and engage multiple aerial threats simultaneously, including aircraft, drones and missiles.
