New Delhi: Traffic movement on major highways leading towards Delhi faced severe disruption on Monday, July 20, after authorities stopped vehicles at several
toll plazas amid the proposed Farmers’ Mahapanchayat. The National Highways Authority of India issued an advisory asking commuters to avoid non-essential travel near the Delhi border.
According to an update shared by NHAI on X, traffic movement was halted early in the morning at key points connecting Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. Travellers using these highways could face long queues, sudden diversions and extra travel time until restrictions are lifted.

Traffic stopped at major toll plazas
NHAI said vehicles were stopped at the Ghaggar Toll Plaza near the Shambhu Border from 5 am. Traffic crossing was also stopped at the Gharaunda Toll Plaza on the Panipat to Delhi corridor.
The agency added, “Further, traffic crossing at toll plazas on various packages of the Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway has also been suspended due to the protest.”
Police deployed at key locations
NHAI said police personnel had been posted at critical points to manage the traffic situation. The highway authority is working with the Traffic Police and local administration to regulate vehicles and help stranded commuters.
“NHAI, in close coordination with the Traffic Police and local administration, is actively regulating traffic and extending all possible assistance to NH commuters,” the statement said.
Officials have asked travellers to follow instructions given by police teams and staff posted on the ground.

People planning to travel towards Delhi have been advised to:
- Avoid non-essential trips near the Delhi border
- Check traffic updates before leaving
- Follow official diversions and alternate routes
- Keep extra water, fuel and phone charge for delays
“NH users are advised to avoid non-essential travel towards the Delhi border, plan their journeys in advance, and use alternate routes/diversions wherever feasible,” NHAI said.
Normal movement is expected to return after local authorities remove the restrictions. No exact restoration time was announced in the advisory.
