Rudraprayag: The Kedarnath Yatra in Uttarakhand is set to become smoother and safer this year as the old Rambada-Garudachatti walking route reopens after
13 years.
This traditional path, which collapsed during the devastating floods of June 2013, has been reconstructed by the Public Works Department in Guptkashi. The reopening of this legendary route is expected to provide great relief to pilgrims visiting Baba Kedarnath.
Pilgrims have been using alternative route after this deluge
The 2013 disaster destroyed the Rambada-Garudachatti route, forcing pilgrims to use alternative paths with limited facilities. For years, devotees had to trek through longer and more difficult routes. Now, after years of effort, the old path has been rebuilt with modern safety measures and amenities.
Construction was done in the phases
According to Vineet Posti, a member of the Badri Kedar Temple Committee, the reconstruction was carried out in phases. First, the 3.3-kilometer stretch from Kedarnath Dham to Garudachatti was completed. Later, the 5.3-kilometer section from Garudachatti to Rambada, which was the worst affected area during the disaster, was also finished. He emphasized that the new arrangements will ensure pilgrims face no inconvenience during their journey.
Posti further explained that facilities such as drinking water, rain shelters, and railings are being installed along the route. These measures will help devotees travel safely even during bad weather. Accommodation and resting points are also being arranged so that pilgrims can complete their trek with comfort and security.
Two trekking options for Kedarnath pilgrims
Pilgrims will now have two trekking options for the Kedarnath Yatra. The first is the renovated Gaurikund–Rambada–Garudachatti–Kedarnath route, which is the old path being reopened. The second remains the currently operational Gaurikund–Rambada–Lincholi–Kedarnath route. Due to changes in the terrain, the distance from Rambada to Kedarnath has increased from 7 kilometers to 8.6 kilometers.

Rajvir Singh, Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department in Guptkashi, confirmed that construction of the footpath is complete and railing installation is in its final stages. He stated that traffic movement on the old route will resume in the upcoming 2026 pilgrimage season. Singh added that the new footpath will make the Kedarnath Yatra safer and more convenient than before, offering significant relief to devotees.

The opening date for Kedarnath Dham will be announced on Mahashivratri, while Badrinath Dham is scheduled to open on April 23rd. Currently, the shrine of Baba Kedar remains frozen, awaiting the arrival of thousands of devotees who will soon embark on their sacred journey.
The reopening of the Rambada-Garudachatti route after 13 years marks a new chapter in the Kedarnath Yatra. With improved safety, better facilities, and restored tradition, pilgrims can look forward to a smoother and more fulfilling spiritual experience in the Himalayas.
