New Delhi: Meta is turning to space solar energy and ultra-long-duration storage as it prepares for the rising power needs of AI data centers. In a blog
post dated April 27, 2026, the company announced two new partnerships with Overview Energy and Noon Energy to support future AI infrastructure with cleaner and more reliable power.
The plan is big, and slightly sci-fi too. Meta says it will work with Overview Energy to bring up to 1 GW of space solar energy to Earth, while Noon Energy will help deploy up to 1 GW/100 GWh of long-duration storage. The idea is to keep AI data centers running with stable power, even when sunlight, wind or grid supply is not enough.
Meta wants space solar energy for AI data centers
Meta said, “Advancing AI at the speed and scale we’re working toward requires more energy.” That line explains why large tech firms are hunting for new power sources as AI models, cloud systems and data centers grow heavier.
Overview Energy’s plan uses satellites in geosynchronous orbit, about 22,000 miles, or nearly 35,400 kilometers, above Earth’s equator. These satellites collect constant sunlight in space and beam it to ground-based solar farms as low-intensity, near-infrared light.
Meta says this could allow solar farms that sit idle at night to generate power around the clock. Since the system uses existing solar farms, the company says it may scale faster than building fully new power projects.
Noon Energy to store power for days
Meta’s second partnership is with Noon Energy. The company’s storage technology uses modular, reversible solid oxide fuel cells and carbon-based storage to provide more than 100 hours of energy storage.
That is the key part. Many present battery systems store power for only a few hours. Noon’s system is aimed at storing power for days.
Meta has reserved up to 1 GW/100 GWh of this storage capacity. A 25 MW/2.5 GWh pilot project is expected to be completed in 2028.
Why this matters for AI and the grid
Meta has already contracted more than 30 GW of clean and renewable energy. It has also backed geothermal energy and 7.7 GW of nuclear energy agreements with companies including Vistra, TerraPower, Oklo and Constellation Energy.
The next milestones are set for 2028. Overview Energy plans an orbital demonstration, while Noon Energy is targeting its storage pilot. If Overview’s system works, commercial delivery to the US grid could start as early as 2030.
