New Delhi: The mercury in Mumbai and Thane is showing no signs of coming down for over the last 48 hours as it’s hovering around blistering 39 degrees
Celsius. The city is currently experiencing a rapidly increasing heatwave in Maharashtra which is making daily life a struggle.
The Meteorological Department’s yellow alert for Tuesday highlighted just how intense this late-April surge has become with eastern parts of the country feeling the brunt of the dry and hot air. Tragically, this extreme weather has already turned fatal in parts of the state as Latur has reported three deaths including a young farmer and an infant while Parbhani recorded the loss of a 37-year-old man to heatstroke. These incidents have put the entire state on high alert as the sun remains relentless.
Prediction for today
A slight shift is expected in the atmosphere with the maximum temperature expected to hover around 34°C with a minimum of 26°C but don’t let the lower numbers fool you.
The humidity is set to climb, meaning the “feels like” temperature will remain quite high, keeping the city sticky and uncomfortable. However, there is a silver lining on the horizon as the thick, hazy glare which we have witnessed so far this week is expected to give way to some cloud cover by Wednesday evening, signalling that the worst of this particular heat spike might finally be peaking.
Weather prediction for rest of the week
The transition will properly start on Thursday, April 30 when the sky will turn partly cloudy, which will finally help cut the direct heat that’s been baking the city all week. While it will still be warm, that piercing “burn” from the sun should start to fade.
The airflow is expected to improve significantly by Friday, May 1. A steadier breeze from the coast will make being outdoors much more bearable, softening the oppressive conditions which all have been dealing with since the start of the week.
Light drizzle or brief rain spells are expected on May 2 as the wind patterns fully shift. It won’t be a total washout, but even a small amount of rain will be enough to wash away the dust and bring the temperatures down to a much more settled level. By Sunday, the weather will become much cooler, ending a soaring week with plenty of cloud cover and a much more pleasant breeze across the city and neighbouring Thane.
