Kolkata: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across South Bengal over the next few days with Kolkata and
several districts likely to witness intense downpours under the influence of a low-pressure system.
The weather office has warned that some districts could receive up to 200 mm of rainfall in a single day raising the possibility of waterlogging in Kolkata and adjoining urban areas. The spell of rain is expected to continue from Saturday through Tuesday, with Sunday likely to see heavy rainfall in Kolkata.
Up to 200 mm rain likely in several districts
According to the IMD’s Alipore Meteorological Centre, Jhargram, Purulia, Paschim Medinipur and Bankura are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall, with isolated areas expected to record up to 200 mm in 24 hours.
Heavy rainfall has also been forecast for the coastal districts and parts of western South Bengal. Meteorologists believe the rainfall during July could compensate for the 28% rainfall deficit recorded across the state in June.
Authorities have cautioned that prolonged spells of rain may lead to waterlogging in Kolkata and nearby suburban areas, potentially disrupting normal life.
Low-pressure system driving rainfall across South Bengal
The weather department attributed the wet spell to a seasonal trough extending from Punjab and Rajasthan through Uttar Pradesh and Bihar which is drawing large volumes of moisture into eastern India. Combined with the low-pressure system, these conditions have become favourable for widespread rainfall across South Bengal.
While South Bengal remains under an active rain spell, North Bengal is expected to see comparatively stable weather. The IMD has not forecast any widespread heavy rainfall in the region over the next six days, although several northern districts continue to recover from the impact of persistent rainfall over recent weeks.
Meteorologists also noted that despite the rain, high humidity levels are likely to continue leading to uncomfortable and sultry weather conditions across many parts of the state.
