Chennai: The Meteorological Department has forecast a possibility of light rain over the next three days, starting today, in the districts situated along
Tamil Nadu’s Western Ghats, as well as in the coastal areas of South Tamil Nadu and the Delta districts. During these rain spells, strong winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour may blow, accompanied by thunder and lightning.
Tamil Nadu rainfall forecast for April 22-23
On April 22 and 23, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely to occur in isolated places across the Western Ghats districts, the coastal Delta districts, the coastal districts of South Tamil Nadu, and the Karaikal region. Dry weather is expected to prevail across the rest of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The Meteorological Department reiterates that during rainfall, strong winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour may blow, accompanied by thunder and lightning.
Temperature outlook
From today until April 23, in the interior districts of Tamil Nadu, there is little likelihood of any significant change in maximum temperatures; however, they may rise slightly. Similarly, in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, no significant change in maximum temperatures is expected. In the interior districts, maximum temperatures in a few isolated places may rise to 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal levels. In the coastal areas, maximum temperatures are expected to remain close to normal levels.
Chennai Weather and discomfort advisory
For Chennai, the Meteorological Department has stated that residents may experience discomfort due to the combination of high temperatures and high humidity. The sky will be partly cloudy, with maximum temperatures likely to be around 36 to 37 degrees Celsius and minimum temperatures around 27 degrees Celsius.
The Meteorological Department has also reported that isolated pockets of coastal Tamil Nadu, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal regions, may experience similar discomfort due to high heat and humidity.
Heat wave across Tamil Nadu
The Meteorological Department reported that yesterday, temperatures exceeded 100 degrees Fahrenheit in 13 locations across Tamil Nadu. Vellore recorded the highest temperature at 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Karur Paramathi, Erode, and Madurai Airport recorded 104 degrees Fahrenheit, while Madurai city sweltered at 103 degrees Fahrenheit. Dharmapuri, Namakkal, Trichy, and Palayamkottai experienced 102 degrees Fahrenheit. Thiruthani, Tirupattur, and Salem recorded 101 degrees Fahrenheit, while Coimbatore registered 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Against this backdrop, the Meteorological Department has issued an advisory stating that temperatures in the interior districts of Tamil Nadu are expected to remain 3 degrees Celsius above normal for the next three days, and that Chennai could experience heat levels reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
