New Delhi: Online backlash has been sparked after content creator Dhruv Rathee released a video alleging that several Bollywood actors, including Deepika
Padukone, have undergone skin-lightening treatments. The claims were circulated widely on YouTube and Reddit and were met with strong resistance from fans. They described the assertions as speculative and misleading.
In the video, Dhruv named actors such as Bipasha Basu, Shilpa Shetty, Kajol, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone.

He suggested that their complexion appeared darker early in their careers and lighter in recent years. He said, “Ek badi lambi list hai yahan par actresses ki jinka career ke shuruwat mein rang thodha dark dhikai deta tha lekin aajkal kafi light dikhai deta hai…,” adding that explanations often given about avoiding sunlight were inaccurate. He further claimed, “Fair skin ka raaz na toh koi cream hai na koi dhoop se bachna, reality hai glutathione injections jo skin lightening ka popular tareeka hai.”
The remarks were quickly challenged online. Several Reddit users defended Deepika, arguing that lighting, camera quality and editing play a major role in how actors appear on screen. One user wrote, “The lighting helps and editing also happens in Final Cut. I don’t think she got any treatments.” Another commented that the Piku star’s early looks reflected a tanning trend popular in the 2000s, rather than any permanent change.
Fans come out in support of Deepika Padukone
It was also pointed out that skin tone can vary naturally due to sun exposure and skincare routines. “People with melanin can have their skin tone change like five shades based on sun exposure and skin care,” a fan explained. Others added that improved cameras and professional lighting now present actors in more flattering ways, without altering their natural complexion.
Questions were also raised about Dhruv Rathee’s intent. Some users suggested that the criticism followed his earlier remarks about the film Dhurandhar, which stars Ranveer Singh. One comment read, “From criticising a good film to criticising a good actress. How much hateful is this?”
Many responses stressed personal choice. “It is her wish. If she wants her skin to be fair, she has every right to get it done,” one user noted, while another added, “Women can do whatever they want.”
