New Delhi: Delhi’s monsoon worry is back on the civic calendar. Every year, a few hours of heavy rain can turn busy roads into slow-moving water channels,
trapping cars, buses and office-goers in the same old traffic mess.
With the rainy season approaching, the Delhi Development Authority has said nearly 70 per cent of desilting work in stormwater drains under its control has been completed. The remaining work is expected to be finished by June 15, just before sustained monsoon showers are likely to test the city’s drainage network.

What DDA has said on monsoon work
According to DDA officials, desilting work is being carried out across 69 kilometres of stormwater drains in Narela and 192 kilometres in Dwarka.
The work includes removing silt, debris, vegetation and other blockages that slow down rainwater flow during heavy showers. Anyone who has seen a plastic bottle stuck at a drain mouth during rain knows how quickly a road can flood. Small blockages can become big commuter problems.
Officials said around 70 per cent of the exercise has been completed so far. Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, who has been reviewing monsoon preparedness, has directed officials to complete the remaining work before June 15.
Why June 15 matters
The June 15 deadline is aimed at getting key drainage infrastructure ready before the monsoon picks up. Apart from DDA, other civic agencies responsible for roads, drainage and flood control are carrying out similar anti-waterlogging work across Delhi.
The focus is on cleaning drains, checking flood-control systems and reviewing locations that often go under water during intense rainfall.
Will Delhi roads stay dry?
That is the real test. Delhi has carried out desilting drives before, yet waterlogging returns to several stretches during heavy rain. Commuters know the usual pattern: traffic slows, vehicles stall and office trips become weather reports.
For now, officials say work is on schedule. The final report card will come only after the first serious spell of rain. If water drains quickly, DDA and other agencies will claim the planning worked. If key roads flood again, questions over Delhi’s drainage system will return quickly.
