New Delhi: At least five people were killed and five others injured after an Amazon-linked Boeing 767 cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International
Airport in the US and crashed into vehicles on Sunday, authorities said. Three of the injured were in critical condition.
The aircraft, operating as Amazon Prime Air Flight 7598 and operated by 21 Air, had arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, when it went off the runway at around 2 pm local time. It crossed a road near the airport and struck several vehicles before coming to a stop and catching fire.
Videos from the scene showed a massive plume of thick black smoke rising over the airport, with flames visible around the aircraft. Emergency crews rushed to the crash site, with more than 60 rescue units and around 200 personnel deployed.

Pilot, co-pilot trapped inside plane
The crash left the pilot and co-pilot trapped inside the aircraft, while several people in vehicles were also trapped. Firefighters worked to rescue those caught in the wreckage and dealt with a fuel leak from the Boeing 767.
Authorities had not immediately identified the five people who died. It was also initially unclear whether any of the fatalities were among the people aboard the aircraft or were occupants of vehicles struck after the plane left the runway.
The crash caused major disruption at Miami International Airport, with runways and taxiways temporarily closed and more than 160 flights cancelled, according to reports. Operations later began returning to normal.
Investigation underway
The US National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the crash. Officials have not yet established what caused the aircraft to overrun the runway.
Weather conditions, including thunderstorms and strong wind gusts, were being examined as possible factors, but authorities have not said that weather caused the crash. Investigators will examine the aircraft, runway conditions, flight data and the crew’s actions before determining the cause.
The Boeing 767 had previously been used as a passenger aircraft before being converted into a freighter. Amazon and 21 Air said they were cooperating with investigators and expressed condolences to the victims and their families.
