New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) Mamata Banerjee met the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) at his office in New Delhi on Monday.
The meeting was regarding Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in her state.
Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan accompanied her at the meeting. Also present were the families of the 3 deceased BLOs and 5 families affected by the SIR. Everyone was wearing black clothes.
The CEC did not listen to us: Mamata Banerjee
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, the CM said, “The CEC did not listen to us. So we boycotted. The Election Commission is a liar. I have never seen such arrogance before.
“He is behaving as if he is the landlord and we are servants. The commission is not even following the Supreme Court’s orders. It is a BJP agent. I have seen many election commissions. But no one has made the commission such a parrot,” she said.
Questioning the timing of the SIR, she added, “If you had to do SIR, then why didn’t you do it after 2002? Why did you do it in three months? If you had to, you would have done it in states other than those where elections are taking place. You would have done SIR later when the elections were over.”
‘Will EC decide the government?’
“Will the common people elect the government or will the Election Commission decide the government before the elections? Even though the surname is changed after marriage, the names are being dropped. The living are being declared dead,” Mamata Banerjee added further. In reference to former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the West Bengal CM noted, “If Atalji were alive today, would he have been able to issue a birth certificate? This SIR is completely undemocratic, unparliamentary.”
Rule of law shall prevail: EC
Rejecting Mamata Banerjee’s allegations, the EC added that Gyanendra Kumar responded to her queries and pointed out that the Rule of Law shall prevail. It added that anybody taking law into their own hands shall be dealt with strictly as per the provisions of law. TMC MLAs are openly using abusive and threatening language against the Commission and especially against the CEC. Also threatening the election officials.
