New Delhi: With a thread on X, Bengaluru-based New Space Startup Pixxel has made a case for orbital data centres. The joke going around at New Space conferences
is that every second commercial space project proposed in India is an orbital data centre. Modern economies generate data in volumes that are rapidly exceeding the design limits of current systems. Telecom networks, financial trading platforms, AI model training clusters, precision agriculture operations, satellite-based Earth monitoring, deep space missions, military systems and power grid management all rely on intensive computation.

Ground-based data centres form the backbone of this digital economy, but they face severe bottlenecks, and are not able to keep up with the explosive growth in porcessing needs. Power, water, land shortages threaten further expansion, with data facilities consuming massive electricity loads, and substantial freshwater supplies for cooling needs. Terrestrial deployments are retarding deployment at a time when computing requirements are accelerating across sectors. The incredible demand highlights the urgent requirement for alternative architectures capable of scaling compute without exhausting the resources on the planet.

Every second, the world generates far more data than its infrastructure was built to handle. Orbital data centres offer a practical path forward by shifting storage and processing into space. Computations can occur directly in orbit, with only refined results transmitted to Earth, minimising bandwidth use. The vacuum environment allows for efficient radiative cooling without water, while the steady availability of solar energy frees the data centres from ground limitations.
The volume in orbit removes the barriers of real estate, allowing quicker, more adaptive and modular deployments. Earlier in the month, Pixxel announced that it is collaborating with Sarvam towards deploying the first Indian orbital data centre satellite in the last quarter of 2026. Neevcloud and Agnikul Cosmos are aiming to launch the first mission of Project Orion, a planned orbital data centre constellation, by the end of the year as well. Such orbital data centres are beyond the current capabilities of ISRO.
