New Delhi: In a historic first, Indian Railways successfully transported a donor heart aboard a Vande Bharat Express for transplantation. The organ was
carried safely and on schedule from Surat to Ahmedabad on Train No. 20901, the Mumbai Central–Gandhinagar Capital Vande Bharat Express.
The heart will be transplanted at the U N Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre in Ahmedabad.
The emergency operation was carried out through close coordination among Indian Railways, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Gujarat Police and medical teams.
To ensure that the organ reached the hospital without delay, the RPF and Gujarat Police established a green corridor from Platform No. 1 of Ahmedabad railway station to the U N Mehta Institute.
Ahmedabad Divisional Railway Manager Ved Prakash said the safe and timely transportation of the heart was a moment of immense pride for Indian Railways.
“In such life-saving missions, every moment counts. The excellent coordination among Indian Railways, the RPF, Gujarat Police and medical teams made this mission a success. For us, playing a role in saving a human life is not merely a responsibility but a supreme obligation of service and humanity,” he said.
The speed and operational reliability of the Vande Bharat Express played a crucial role in transporting the organ within the required timeframe.
The operation involved coordination among railway divisions, security personnel, local police, doctors and organ transplant coordinators. Swift action by all the agencies ensured that the heart reached its destination safely and without delay.
The successful mission demonstrated the potential of India’s railway network to support time-sensitive medical emergencies and organ transplantation.
