New Delhi: After years of anticipation, engineering breakthroughs, and construction on an unprecedented scale, India’s first bullet train is finally inching
towards reality. The ambitious Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project – often described as one of the country’s most transformative infrastructure initiatives- is now around 80 per cent complete, with the first operational stretch expected to welcome passengers in 2027. Once fully operational, the high-speed rail corridor promises to redefine intercity travel, slashing journey times, introducing world-class Japanese Shinkansen technology, and offering an experience unlike anything Indian Railways has seen before.

India’s first bullet train is finally coming soon in Mumbai
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently announced that the first section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor, connecting Surat and Bilimora in Gujarat, is expected to become operational in 2027. The remaining stretches of the corridor will be commissioned in phases before the entire 508-kilometre route is completed. According to the government, nearly 80 per cent of the overall project has already been completed, marking a major milestone for India’s biggest high-speed rail venture.
The biggest attraction for travellers is, unsurprisingly, the travel time.
Once the entire Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor becomes operational, the journey between the two cities is expected to take approximately 1 hour and 58 minutes on limited-stop services. Trains making more stops are expected to complete the trip in around 2 hours and 17 minutes, still significantly faster than the current rail journey, which typically takes between six and eight hours.
Designed for an operational speed of 320 km/h, the trains are capable of reaching speeds of up to 350 km/h, placing India among the select nations operating true high-speed rail systems.
Japanese Shinkansen technology comes to India
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project is being built with technology and expertise from Japan’s world-renowned Shinkansen network, which has maintained an exceptional safety record for decades.
The corridor will feature dedicated high-speed tracks, advanced signalling systems, earthquake detection technology, automatic train protection, and modern passenger amenities designed to deliver a smoother, quieter, and safer travel experience than conventional rail services. Technology transfer is also expected to support India’s long-term high-speed rail ambitions under the Make in India initiative.
Route, stations and connectivity
The complete Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor will stretch approximately 508 kilometres and include 12 stations across Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

For travellers, it won’t simply be a faster way to move between Mumbai and Ahmedabad , it will mark the beginning of a new era in Indian rail travel, where journeys measured in hours today could soon be completed in under two.
