New Delhi: Sonam Raghuvanshi, one of the main accused in the Meghalaya honeymoon murder case, surrendered before a trial court on Tuesday after the Supreme
Court cancelled her bail.
The top court had directed Sonam to surrender within three weeks. The trial court sent her to judicial custody following her surrender. She had spent nearly three months outside prison on bail.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed that Sonam appeared before the trial court on Tuesday and was remanded to judicial custody.
Raja’s family welcomes decision
Raja Raghuvanshi’s brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi, welcomed the Supreme Court’s order. He thanked the judiciary, the Meghalaya government and the investigating agencies for their role in the case.
Vipin also expressed hope that the trial would end soon. He sought strict punishment for everyone found responsible for his brother’s murder.
Five accused chargesheeted
Meghalaya Police have filed a 790-page chargesheet before the Judicial Magistrate First Class court in Sohra subdivision.
The chargesheet names five people in connection with Raja’s murder. They are Sonam Raghuvanshi, her alleged partner Raj Kushwaha, and three suspected contract killers identified as Vishal Singh Chauhan, Akash Rajput and Anand Kurmi.
Police have accused the five of conspiring to kill Raja during his honeymoon trip to Sohra in May 2025.
Couple went missing
Raja and Sonam arrived in Shillong on May 21, 2025. They later travelled to Sohra as part of their honeymoon trip. The couple was reported missing on May 26. Authorities then launched a major search operation to trace them.
Search teams recovered Raja’s body from a deep gorge at Arliang Riat Kunongrim near Wei Sawdong Falls on June 2. Police then began a detailed investigation and arrested several suspects. The case soon became one of Meghalaya’s most closely watched criminal investigations.
