Dehradun: The weather in Dehradun turned severe early this morning when a cloudburst struck Sahastradhara, causing the Tamsa River to swell significantly.
As a result, the Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple was submerged under water, alarming residents and temple officials alike.
Temple priest Acharya Bipin Joshi said the river’s flow increased rapidly around 5:00 AM, flooding the entire premises. Despite the high waters, the sanctum sanctorum of the temple remains intact. No casualties have been reported so far.

Dangerous rise of waters at Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple
Residents witnessed the dangerous rise of waters at Tapkeshwar Mahadev. While the Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple is underwater, there is relief that the central worship area is safe. Following the cloudburst in Dehradun on Monday night, shops and hotels in Sahastradhara’s Karligad area suffered damage during the night’s cloudburst. Seven to eight shops collapsed, and two to three large hotels reported damage. Around 100 people were trapped in flooded areas during the night. Local villagers quickly came to help and rescued those trapped, moving many to safer locations. Administrative and rescue forces have also been mobilised.

District Magistrate Savin Bansal has taken personal charge of the situation. He is coordinating with various departments and deploying teams to assess the damage and ensure safety. SDRF, NDRF and Public Works Department teams are actively working.
Heavy rain, thunderstorm in Dehradun since early morning
Heavy rain, thunder and lightning continue in Dehradun since early morning. With soil already saturated and rivers swelling, there is fear of more flash floods or landslides. Authorities are particularly concerned for people living near rivers or low-lying areas.
In Mussoorie, a similar disruption has been reported. The Mussoorie‑Dehradun road has been closed due to a landslide near Pani Wala Band, affecting traffic and isolating parts of the hill area.
Yellow alert in 7 districts
The Meteorological Centre has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in many districts including Dehradun, Chamoli, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar, Bageshwar and Nainital today. Several other districts are also expected to receive intense rainfall.
