New Delhi: The Government of India on Wednesday intensified its action against illegal online betting and gambling platforms, blocking 242 website links
in a fresh enforcement drive. The officials said that the move is part of a wider effort to shield users especially young people from the financial and social risks linked to unlawful online gaming activities.
The sources indicated that this latest action takes the total number of illegal betting and gambling websites taken down so far to kore than 7,800. The pace of enforcement has picked up sharply since the passage of the Online Gaming Act which gave authorities stronger legal tools to act against unauthorised platforms operating in the country.
Focus on user safety
The government officials said the primary aim of the crackdown is to protect users from predatory practices often used by illegal betting sites. They even noted that many such platforms target young users through misleading advertisements and easy payment options, pushing them toward addictive behaviour and financial losses.
Authorities even believe that stricter action is necessary to prevent long-term social harm including debt, mental health issues and cyber fraud linked to unregulated online gambling.
