New Delhi: A 22-year-old medical student in northern India has revealed how he created a viral AI-generated influencer and made thousands of dollars from
a niche political audience on the internet. The fictional character ‘Emily Hart’ was an introverted young woman introduced as a conservative figure, which soon spread like wildfire on social media with content that was extremely polarising.
Launched in January, the account grew rapidly, surpassing 10,000 followers in a few weeks. A number of posts had millions of views. The author, who referred to himself as ‘Sam’ in interviews, claimed that the project was his most successful online project following his failure on YouTube and sale of study notes. He then charged subscriptions and merchandise to monetise the account, but it was later banned by Instagram due to the fraudulent activity. There is a corresponding Facebook page.
Who was Emily Hart?
Emily Hart was created as an artificial intelligence-based personality based on such stars as Jennifer Lawrence and Sydney Sweeney. The profile of the character was used to emphasise areas of interest, including Christianity, fishing and beer, to appeal to a particular group of audiences.
Sam claimed to have used generative AI technologies to generate images and captions, developing a coherent identity that was genuine to the followers. He commercialised the account using websites such as Fanvue, and in a few weeks, he made money.
Strategy: Viral content and ‘Rage Bait’
As the creator stated, the success of the account was based on the targeted messages and posts with emotional appeal. He argued that Google Gemini recommended targeting conservative audiences, although this has been refuted by Google.
Sam shared material each day that was consistent with pro-Christian, pro-gun and anti-immigration messages. The goal was simple: trigger reactions. The posts would be structured in such a way that they would be appealing and outrageous enough to be shared and receive comments. The approach, he said, was a win-win because involvement by critics also increased reach.
Why the model worked?
Niche targeting was important to the creator. The targeted audience allowed the account to amass a following within a short time. Simultaneously, provocative content assisted in circulating posts into a broader algorithm.
He also reported that the efforts to repeat the strategy with a liberal-leaning one did not work so well. This, he claimed, further cemented his assumption that there are online communities that are more receptive to viral political content.
Although it grew at the beginning, the account was finally deleted by Instagram due to the breach of policies of misleading or fraudulent activity. The platform had not originally indicated that the content was AI-generated.
Having made thousands of dollars, Sam reported that he has taken a back seat in the project and shifted his attention to medical studies. The case throws into the limelight the increasing issues of AI-generated influencers, fake news, and the ease with which online audiences can be massively manipulated.
