New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for fuel conservation has triggered a fresh austerity drive across several Indian states, with work-from-home
orders, smaller convoys, fewer official events and a push for public transport now becoming part of government action plans. The measures come amid concerns over West Asia tensions, fuel use and India’s dependence on energy imports.
The discussion has also gained attention in business circles, with industrialist Harsh Goenka’s post bringing the austerity push into wider public debate. The state-level response now shows how a fuel-saving appeal has turned into a broader governance message, touching transport, electricity use, official travel and workplace rules.
PM Modi’s austerity push gets state response
Several states have started cutting non-essential fuel use and government spending. The main focus is to reduce road travel, move more meetings online and encourage people to use public transport.
Delhi has announced one of the widest plans so far. Government employees will work from home for two days every week, and private firms will be advised to follow a similar system. The state has also introduced “Metro Monday” and urged citizens to follow one “No Vehicle Day” every week. Foreign visits by ministers and officials have been banned for one year.

Delhi and Tripura take clear WFH route
Delhi’s plan goes beyond fuel savings. AC temperatures in government offices will be kept between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius, more meetings will shift online, and official events have been cut for three months.
Tripura has issued a direct order for 50 per cent work from home for government employees. The order applies to Group C and Group D staff on a rotational basis through alternate weeks, and it will continue until further orders.
Convoy cuts become the new political signal
Maharashtra has proposed cutting ministerial convoys by half. Uttar Pradesh has ordered an immediate 50 per cent reduction in vehicles used by ministers and officials. In Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav reduced his convoy from 13 vehicles to eight.
This may look small on paper, but convoy culture is a big public symbol in India. The state is asking citizens to save fuel, so ministers are now being pushed to show the same discipline.
