Jakarta: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that while both India and Indonesia share a common heritage, the relationship between both countries
is rooted to the heritage of Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Addressing the Indonesian Parliament, the Prime Minister observed that while the bond between both the countries went back to centuries, India and Indonesia are connected through magnificent monuments like Borobudur and Prambanan.

“We share a common history. Our relationship is rooted in the heritage of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Our bond goes back centuries to the knowledge of Nalanda. We are also connected through magnificent monuments such as Borobudur and Prambanan,” PM Modi said.
He added, “Even though our capitals may be thousands of kilometers apart, the distance between us across the sea is only 150 km. In other countries, the sea may have been a cause of borders and distances. But between India and Indonesia, the sea has not been a symbol of distance; the sea is a bridge between us. It is the centre of our shared future. India is a country that believes not in expansionism but in development. That is why India has the motto of together with all and development for all. With this mantra, I have come before you”.

Talking about India’s economic growth, the PM said that over 25 crore Indian’s came out of poverty in the last decade. “That is why, when India and Indonesia stand together, the world’s faith grows stronger that democracy creates opportunities,” he added further.
The PM noted that while India is the world’s largest democracy, Indonesia is the world’s third-largest democracy. He noted, “India has hundreds of languages and numerous traditions, and so does Indonesia with hundreds of languages and numerous traditions. India has the mantra of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, while Indonesia has the philosophy of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika. Both of us have made this diversity the foundation of our unity in our democracies”.

Earlier in India, Indonesia conferred PM Modi with the country’s highest honour ‘Bintang Adipurna of the Republic of Indonesia’ medal for his role in improving ties between both the countries further Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto presented the medal to the PM.
