New Delhi: During its 2026 global press conference in Japan, Honda revealed its next-generation saloon prototype. The model will come powered by a new-gen
hybrid system and is expected to launch in North American markets by 2030.
Honda Motor Co Ltd’s global CEO, Toshihiro Mibe, said, “Honda will reallocate more development and production resources into hybrid models to accelerate the market launch ahead of the original schedule.” Further, he said that there will be an increase in the number of “compelling products” too.
Honda stated that the new models from 2027 will come powered with an all-new hybrid system and ride on a new-gen platform. It mentions that the new-gen twin motor hybrid system comes with increased driving efficiency, by “expanding the range where the engine operates” in a very efficient manner.
With that, Honda is expected to improve the fuel economy by somewhere above 10 per cent while also reducing costs by 30 per cent. Further, it claims that a new electric AWD unit will lend quite a precise and responsive motor control.
The brand mentioned that an in-house-developed, next-generation ADAS system would be part of the new hybrid-powered line-up from 2028. The system will assist the driver for vehicle-related operations, which include acceleration and steering throughout the entire route to their destination. This will happen on both expressways and normal roads, based on driver inputs to the navigation system.
The new hybrid saloon unveiling happens when the brand is changing its strategy, calling off the 0 Series saloon and SUV due to the challenging business environment.
Honda’s prototype saloon design language
The saloon prototype comes with a standout fastback look that takes cues from the Accord sold abroad. The front comes with a split headlamp design, the bumper gets a dual-tone look with wide air inlets, and even Honda’s new logo is placed above the black-finished grille.
The side comes with flared wheel arches, a sloping roofline, sporty alloy wheels and a prominent shoulder line. The back gets a high-mounted stop lamp, the bumper comes with black finishing and even wraparound connected LED taillamps, with a black trim in the section above the taillamps.
Honda might not bring the saloon here; the brand is scheduled to have a new SUV come in 2028. There are chances of a new midsize SUV, which could be the 0 Alpha electric SUV, expected to arrive around the same time, and in fact, the brand is set to launch at least 10 new models by the end of the decade. Next week, Honda will introduce the City facelift and ZR-V.
