The Uttarakhand CM has instructed the authorities to arrest the absconding accused at the earliest and assured that all will be in custody soon. Furthermore, Dhami warned the citizens that whoever plays with law and order will not be given any leniency from the government.
What happened in Dehradun?
Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Nandanagar in the Unakoti district of Tripura, lost his life when attackers stabbed him during a racist attack in Dehradun. Anjel was with his younger brother, Michael Chakma, when a group of men stopped them and allegedly hurled racial slurs at them on December 9.
This led to a confrontation at a local market. The witnesses confirmed the chaos began with the group of men called the brothers as ‘Chinese.’ Anjel calmly challenged the abuse and said, “We are not Chinese. We are Indians. What certificate should we show to prove that?”
After that, the situation escalated, and chaos erupted when the group of men attacked the brothers with knives. Anjel suffered injuries to his neck and spine, whereas Michael remained in serious condition.
After being stabbed multiple times, Anjel’s body was flown to Agartala. The death of Anjel sparked anger among the northeastern states and Tripura.
The chairman of the Tipra Motha Party, Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, helped Anjel’s family financially and also arranged the funeral event.
The students began the protest, demanding a national law against racial hate crimes.
