New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to attend the18th BRICS Summit that India is hosting New Delhi in September 2026. Kremlin has confirmed
his participation in the summit with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov saying Putin will “definitely” take part in the event that holds immense importance in the global political scenario. Notably, this is the Russian President’s second visit to India in less than a year.
India to host 18th BRICS Summit
India is going to host the 18th BRICS Summit reportedly on September 12–13, 2026, in New Delhi. This will be the fourth time that the country is hosting the summit. India currently has the presidency of the bloc, and the host, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will bring together leaders from major emerging economies at a time of heightened global uncertainty due to the conflict in the West Asia between the US and Iran.
The last time Putin came to India was in December 2025 for two days. During that visit, the Russian President held talks with PM Modi at the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit to strengthen bilateral ties. Also, the visit marked the 25th anniversary of the Declaration on Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
What is BRICS?
BRICS is an intergovernmental organization which has 11 major emerging markets and developing countries of the world: China, Russia, India, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and United Arab Emirates. The organisation is a significant platform where leaders from those countries converge to consult and cooperate on contemporary issues having global as well as regional significance, and issues of global political and economic governance. It was formed as BRIC in 2006 and became BRICS after South Africa was included in the group in 2010. The theme of the 2026 summit, hosted by New Delhi, is reportedly “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
