Bengaluru: Food safety authorities in Bengaluru have uncovered unsafe cooking oil being used at more than 40 food establishments after laboratory tests
detected harmful levels of trans fat.
The findings have prompted the department to issue notices, levy penalties and prepare stricter rules on the reuse of cooking oil.
Laboratory tests reveal violations
The Food Safety Department collected samples of used cooking oil from hotels, restaurants, pubs, bars, clubs and roadside food stalls across Bengaluru as part of a quality inspection drive.
Laboratory analysis found that more than 40 establishments were using cooking oil that did not meet prescribed safety standards. Officials said the oil contained trans fat at levels considered unsafe for consumption.
Following the findings, notices were issued to the owners of the establishments concerned. The department has also imposed a total fine of ₹28.91 lakh for violations of food safety regulations.
Health risks highlighted
Experts have warned that repeatedly reusing cooking oil can significantly increase trans fat levels. Consuming food prepared in such oil has been linked to a higher risk of heart disease, fatty liver disease and certain types of cancer.
The department said controlling the repeated use of frying oil is important to protect public health and reduce long-term health risks associated with unhealthy cooking practices.
Stricter rules planned
In response to the inspection results, the Food Safety Department is preparing new guidelines aimed at regulating the reuse of cooking oil and improving quality control across food establishments.
The proposed rules will apply to hotels, restaurants, pubs, bars and clubs. Officials have also warned that businesses failing to comply with the new standards could face stricter legal action and heavier penalties in future inspections.
Public urged to remain cautious
The department has advised members of the public to be careful when consuming fried food, particularly from roadside vendors and commercial food outlets. Consumers have been urged to pay attention to hygiene standards and the quality of cooking oil used in preparing food.
Officials said regular inspections will continue to ensure compliance with food safety regulations and encourage businesses to adopt safer cooking practices. The latest enforcement drive is part of broader efforts to improve food safety standards and reduce health risks for consumers across the city.
