Chennai: A trough of low pressure extending from Marathwada to South Tamil Nadu, passing through Interior Karnataka, has brought widespread rainfall across
the state, providing much-needed relief to residents suffering under scorching summer temperatures. The Meteorological Centre has forecast continued rainfall in several districts.
Tamil Nadu weather forecast
The Meteorological Centre has predicted light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning at a few places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal today. Heavy rain is likely at one or two places in the hilly regions of Coimbatore district, as well as in the Nilgiris, Erode, and Theni districts. Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is expected at a few places in South Tamil Nadu, with light rain at one or two places in North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Heavy rain is also possible at one or two places in the Virudhunagar, Madurai, and Sivaganga districts.
Kodaikanal: Tree falls disrupt traffic
In Kodaikanal, known as the “Princess of Hill Stations,” heavy rain lashed down for an hour, with rainfall reported in areas including Observatory, Lake Road, Anna Salai, and Moonjikkal. In the Pulicholai area, traffic came to a standstill with vehicles queuing up over a long stretch after a massive tree snapped and fell across the road.
Ooty: Sudden downpour brings joy
In Udhagamandalam, despite the tourist season having commenced, residents were suffering under scorching heat. A sudden downpour brought them immense relief and joy. Rain fell across various areas, including the Botanical Garden, Charing Cross, the Market, and the ATC locality.
Dindigul and surrounding areas
In Dindigul district, heavy rains lashed across several regions, including Natham, Sanarpatti, Gopalpatti, Anjukulipatti, Thavasimadai, Chinnallapatti, and Athur.
Vellore: Respite after days of extreme heat
In Vellore, after days of oppressive heat with temperatures soaring above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, sudden rains provided much-needed respite. Residents in Vellore, Sathyuvachari, Katpadi, Vallimalai, Ponnai, and surrounding areas felt a sense of relief following the rainfall.
Yercaud: Tourists revel in rain
In Yercaud, Salem district, tourists revelled in the sudden downpour, enjoying recreational activities such as boating while getting drenched in the rain. Widespread rains were reported in various parts of Salem district, including Vincent, Asthampatti, Gorimedu, Ammapettai, Ponnammaipettai, and Kondalampatti.
Perambalur: Strong winds uproot trees
In Perambalur district, heavy rains accompanied by gusty winds lashed areas such as Kunnam, Veppur, Labbaiqudikadu, and Agaram Sigur. In the Eechampatti area, banana trees were uprooted and toppled by the strong winds.
Kovilpatti and southern districts
In Kovilpatti and its surrounding areas—including Kamanayakkanpatti, Nalattinputhur, and Pandavarmangalam—heavy rains accompanied by thunder and lightning poured down for over an hour, effectively bringing down the temperature and bringing relief to the people.
Temperature outlook
The Meteorological Centre has predicted that maximum temperatures in North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are likely to rise gradually by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius starting today until April 7, while there is little likelihood of any significant change in maximum temperatures in South Tamil Nadu.
For Chennai, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy today, with maximum temperatures hovering around 36 to 37 degrees Celsius and minimum temperatures around 26 to 27 degrees Celsius. No warnings have been issued to fishermen.
Recent temperature records
The Meteorological Department reported that Madurai recorded a maximum temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit yesterday. Trichy and Thoothukudi each recorded temperatures of 102.2 degrees Fahrenheit, while Chennai Meenambakkam recorded 96 degrees Fahrenheit.
