New Delhi: Kolkata recorded its coldest January day on Tuesday, January 6, as the temperature plummeted to 10.2 degrees Celsius, according to the IMD.
The next two days will also be intensely cool across southern West Bengal.
The minimum temperature across Kolkata had dipped 11 degrees Celsius only once in the last decade, touching 10.9 degrees Celsius in 2012. The all-time low remains 7.2 degrees Celsius, marked in December 1965.
In some areas, Dum Dum recorded 9.5 degrees, and Howrah recorded 9 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, marking below the 10-degree mark, according to the IMD.
“Cold day conditions will prevail in nine districts of the state. These include Malda, North Dinajpur and South Dinajpur in north Bengal; and Bankura, Birbhum, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Murshidabad, and Nadia districts in South Bengal,” An official of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata’s Alipore stated.
The hilly regions of North Bengal may drop in the coming days, whereas Darjeeling might witness snowfall.
Bengal records cold spell
Bengal is recording cold waves this season, and the weather will remain chill in around 9-10 districts. In South Bengal, the western districts of Bankura, Birbhum, and West Burdwan, and from North Bengal, Malda, North Dinajpur, and South Dinajpur will experience cold waves.
Meanwhile, several districts may sink to five degrees Celsius. Dense fog is also a possibility in Bengal during the early morning hours.
Sikkim and Darjeeling might witness snowfall, as the IMD forecasts that North Bengal’s temperature will remain four to six degrees Celsius below normal, and the visibility also may drop to 50 meters in some places during early hours.
Kolkata weather forecast
Kolkata will also witness a slight drop over the next few days, but the maximum temperature is likely to be around 19 degrees Celsius, the Alipore RMC said.
The temperature is yet to break the previous records, as Kolkata’s lowest temperature record is 6.7 degrees Celsius, recorded in 1899, and with current forecasts, the temperature may drop in the coming days.
