new history in the world of industrial metals. For the first time, the price of copper has crossed the level of 13,000 dollars per tonne. This boom is believed to be an extension of the tremendous rally that began last year. Benchmark futures in London saw a jump of up to 4.3% in a single day. Due to the strike in Chile’s Mantoverde Copper Mine, there was a tremendous rise in copper prices due to supply disruption. Copper prices have risen at a time when demand is constantly increasing due to projects related to data centers, electric car batteries and energy transition.
Incidents such as the deadly accident in Indonesia’s second largest copper mine and the underground flood in Congo have deepened the supply crisis, which led to prices hitting new highs.
Copper prices jump
Copper, which set a new record on London’s London Metal Exchange, fell a bit later. However, the three-month copper contract was still seen trading at 12991.50 dollars per tonne with a rise of 4.19%. Copper jumped 42% in 2025, which is its best annual performance since 2009.
Why Copper price is rising?
Speaking exclusively to News9’s Biplob Ghosal, Ajay Suresh Kedia, said copper prices are on the rise due to global supply crunch due to mine disruptions and refined deficit is projected near 330,000 tonne in 2026.
The expert further said trade distortions like US tariff threats triggering front-loading of shipments, tightening availability elsewhere are also the reason behind the jump in Copper price.
Structural demand boom: EVs, renewables, data centers, and AI driving demand faster than mine supply growth.
“Copper prices have surged to record highs above $13,000 per metric ton on the London Metal Exchange, driven by a powerful mix of supply tightness and structural demand growth. Disruptions at key producing regions such as Chile, Peru, Indonesia, and emerging risks around Venezuela have constrained mine output, while refined copper deficits are expected to widen into 2026,” the founder of Kedia Advisory stated.
At the same time, renewed US tariff threats—including duties as high as 50%—have prompted traders to rush shipments into the US, distorting global trade flows and draining inventories in other regions. Demand remains exceptionally strong due to electrification, electric vehicles, renewable power capacity, and rapid expansion of AI-led data centers. These forces have attracted speculative interest, amplifying the upside momentum. On MCX Copper prices rallied ~62% in 2025 and today trading at 1330 level still with firmness with 3.36% in last 6days, he further said.

Should you buy Copper? What expert has to say
Ajay Kedia said there is a bullish long-term outlook and 2026 price looks firm to test $15000/mt.
The expert said that there could be volatility risk due to Trump tariffs, China demand, and macro economic slowdown.
In Indian context, he said that MCX copper trend is positive, but advised disciplined entries are critical.
“Copper remains attractive for medium- to long-term investors despite elevated prices, supported by persistent supply deficits and energy-transition demand. Market expect average prices of $11,000–$12,500 per tonne in 2026, with upside risks toward $15,000 if disruptions persist. Institutions such as JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs continue to highlight tightening fundamentals, though they warn that near-term volatility could emerge from US trade policy shifts, uneven Chinese demand, or global growth concerns,” Kedia said.
On MCX copper broadly mirrors global cues and remains in an uptrend, but chasing prices at highs increases risk. A staggered approach—buying on dips above strong technical supports near 1260—offers a more balanced risk-reward profile. Overall, the structural deficit narrative continues to favor the bulls looking to fundamentals can test 1500/1550 also as “Copper is new Gold” and financial investor are also looking for positioning in Commodity, the expert added.
What should existing copper investors do?
Kedia advised the existing investors to hold on to their portfolio with discipline as structural deficits favour higher prices into 2026. He said risk management is essential and advised investors to book partial profits and purchase during sharp rallies.
“Existing investors should maintain copper exposure, as the medium-term outlook remains constructive amid supply shortages and sustained demand from EVs, renewables, and grid expansion. Partial profit booking on spikes above $13,000/mt can help manage volatility arising from US tariffs or macro uncertainty,” Kedia said.
On MCX, support is at 1240 are advisable to guard against corrective phases driven by China demand slowdowns. Prospective buyers should accumulate gradually on pullbacks, keeping copper exposure limited to 15-20% of portfolio value due to stretched valuations. Participation can be through MCX futures or Indian equities such as Hindustan Copper stock. Monitor LME/COMEX inventories, US policy signals, and China stimulus closely—long-term fundamentals remain positive, but disciplined timing is crucial, the expert added.
